My earliest memory is of standing in the backyard of my grandparents' house in Erie, Pennsylvania. My mother's parents. I am with my grandfather and probably between ages two and three. My grandfather (Grampy, I called him) is bent over and tears off a leaf from a plant growing near the house. He gives me the leave to taste and tells me its name: mint.
