New Orleans gardens

Friends in the Garden City have returned home and are gradually putting their small piece of the Big Easy back together. Their diary of recovery, Inside The Bowl, shares with us some thoughts and photos of the lesser known corners of New Orleans life.

A West Monroe, Louisiana gardener wrote True Dirt to share her concern for and photos of another Crescent City treasure - the grand old oaks of the City Park botanical garden.

BK (before Katrina) and AK (after Katrina) photos from City Park in New Orleans where the botanical garden is located give an idea of how the rest of the city's trees and plant life may have fared. This area of the city was spared the worst of the flooding but was hard hit by the winds. You can make a donation to the Tree Fund or to help repair and restore other areas of the park which is a non-profit organization that operates on donations and local support. Since Katrina, the park has had to close and lay off employees, lacking sufficient revenue to support payrolls as well as to repair damage.

Another Katrina tragedy was the New Orleans art museum which has a wonderful sculpture garden. We visited this unique and magical garden the last time we were in the city.

Thank you for this. I was wondering how your friends fared.
